[Spellyans] The quantity system

Yes, this something that has been bothering me. If the word 'provia'
carries tonic stress on [-i-] then the [-i@] is an example of two vowels
with hiatus as you describe. This contrasts with 'profya' that ends with
a rising diphthong [j@]. Rial/ryal contains a diphthong [-i at -].Jon

Jon,

Neither are true diphthongs in the sense that they occur within one
syllable, it’s two vowels with hiatus. Even if there was a sequence
[“I.a] in opposition to [“i:.a] at one time, I believe they fell in with
each other. That also goes for words that originally had /”Ixa/ which
also became [“i:.@] as in <bîan>.
