Owen (Mon, Nov 22, 2010 3:57 am) writes,
"Is there any practical reason to distinguish <ëw>/<ÿw> from <ew>? I mean, does anybody pronounce words like <byw> with an [ɪw]-type pronunciation ([iw], [ju]...) who would not do the same with words like <tew> (the latter being a learner's error)?"

Rightly or wrongly, I pronounce <yw> as [ɪw] and I pronounce <ew> as [ew]. I do not distinguish between [ɪw] and [iw] in my pronunciation.
Ol an gwella,
Jon
