— Nance 1938 has kyst (short vowel).
— Williams 2006 has E. box, bin = C. kyst (short vowel).
— Kennedy 2009 has E. bin = C. kist (short vowel),
— Gendall 2008 has the same.
— OED 1996 has cist, kist (short vowel, origin Welsh = chest)
— Welsh (Geiriadur Mawr1981) has cist (short vowel)
— Scots (Warrack 1911) has E. chest, box = S. kist (short vowel),
while the long vowel version S. keist/keest is a completely separate
word meaning 'cast, vomited; sap, substance, while the short-vowel
homophone kyst means 'sap, substance'.
— Scots Gaelic (MacThòmhais 1981) and Irish Gaelic (Dineen 1934) each
have ciste for chest/box (short vowel).

I think I'll be sticking with the short vowel for this word.
