I regularly use an online Hungarian-English dictionary. One of the imput choices is "ignore accents". Since diacritics are common in Hungarian, this is sensible. Moreover Hungarians themselves sometimes get diacritics wrong, confusing long vowels with short ones.
When writing Hungarian, however, one always uses diacritics. Not to do so would be incorrect.
