Craig and fiends,
I have just received my copy of MAGA, Cornish Language Partnership
Newsletter, which contains the sad news of the passing of Hilary Shaw.
I first met Hilary when I interviewed her as an informant for my 2000
Independent Academic Study on Cornish. Hilary was great help to me in
supporting me in my efforts to make it up the grades of the Kesva exams.
We corresponded on language topics, and I was able to attend some of her
classes on my visits to Cornwall.
Folk such as Hilary were the vital links in passing on their knowledge and
enthusiasms for the language over the many years when the language received
no official recognition, use or material support. Without them there would
have been no revival today.
I shall miss the valued contacts which we had. As she was a single lady, I
know of no relative to whom I can pass condolences or say what a support her
books and letters were to me and others.
We say in Gaelic of one who has passed on, especially if their life has been
one of achievement, "Clach air a carn, agus a cuid de Pharras dhi." I
wonder what one could say in Cornish? Cres ha Paradys perhaps?

Have just heard that Neil's been rushed to hospital with a suspected stroke.
I sincerely hope this turns out to be minor and that he'll be OK.
