[Spellyans] cledh etc

Craig,

I’m sure that you are right. It’s Kair as in “hair”, and the ow is not posh high oh! but a West-country low and mellow.
Why then Porthcurno? Has this ever been spelt Porthkairnoe, or anything like that? Why the <u>?

Regards,

Andrew J. Trim

Does anyone agree that Kernow is almost universally mispronounced?

I hear "ker" (often with the R omitted, Home Counties style) + "noe" (often rounded to 'posh' English standard).

I'm sure it should be: KAIR-nau. (here the -ow would be like an American's pronunciation of -ou- in "thought")

  Precisely my point, Craig.

'eu' encourages mispronunciation even amongst those that profess to know better.

Dan's courses have what I'd call exemplary pronunciation. It's recognizably Cornish and doesn't sound like a BBC presenter trying to speak another tongue. Which is often what I do hear. I'm even hearing "roodh" for <rudh> "red", from some who profess to be fluent.

One of the huge problems of learning Cornish so far has been the lack of accessibility to exemplar speakers (whoever they may be) and deficiencies in the orthographies resulting in poor pronunciation.

I've been enjoying Dan's Desky Kernowek audio courses - though I'm not as aware of good and bad practice!
